Abortion incidence and severity of complications in Sierra Leone

The report highlights the status of abortion in Sierra Leone. Abortion is legally restricted only allowed to save the lives of pregnant women, in case of rape or incest and, to preserve the physical and mental health of the woman. While the Sierra Leone government has made significant strides in addressing maternal health outcomes through various legislative and policy reforms, the persistently high maternal mortality rate in the country suggests that unsafe abortion continues to pose are a threat to the health and lives of women of reproductive age.

This report highlights the findings of a 2021 nationwide abortion study in Liberia that aimed to estimate the incidence and severity of related complications. The study notes that induced abortions are common in Liberia with most of them linked to unintended pregnancies. Most women present in health facilities with severe or near miss complications that threaten their lives and can potentially result in death. Such complications tend to demand attendance by highly skilled providers (such as physicians and gynecologists) and long hospital admissions.
