Adolescents’ experience of mistreatment and abuse during childbirth: a cross-sectional community survey in a low-income informal settlement in Nairobi, Kenya

This publication is a research article about adolescent mothers' experiences of mistreatment and abuse during facility-based childbirth in a low-income informal settlement in Nairobi, Kenya. Specifically, it examines: The prevalence of mistreatment and abuse (physical, verbal, stigma, discrimination, neglect, lack of privacy, and detainment) reported by adolescent mothers; The association between these experiences of mistreatment and abuse and the adolescents' satisfaction with care, their intention to use the facility for future births, and their willingness to recommend the facility to others.The study highlights that mistreatment and abuse are common and negatively impact adolescents' perceptions and future use of healthcare facilities.

Naïve, uninformed and sexually abused: circumstances surrounding adolescent pregnancies in Malawi

The article examines the circumstances surrounding adolescent pregnancies in Malawi. It focuses on the perspectives of pregnant and parenting adolescents, as well as their parents/guardians, to understand the factors contributing to early and unintended pregnancies. The study uses qualitative data collected through semi-structured interviews in Blantyre, Malawi. It explores issues such as adolescents' limited knowledge of contraceptives, poverty, sexual violence, school dropout, COVID-19 school closures, and adolescents' naivety. The report also highlights the differences in views between adolescents and their parents regarding the reasons for these pregnancies and provides recommendations for addressing the issue, including comprehensive sexuality education programs and community engagement.
