Learning about healthy relationships (UNESCO)
A growing global evidence base for CSE documents how well-implemented, in-school programmes can positively affect health and well-being outcomes of learners across diverse contexts. However, evidence gaps remain and more research is needed to understand CSE's full potential beyond health-related outcomes.
In 2020, a UNESCO-convened expert consultation identified a gap in research regarding outcomes related to building healthy relationships during adolescence. To address this gap, UNESCO commissioned a study to explore how national CSE programmes affect learners'relationships in five contexts:
- To explore learner-and school-level outcomes related to the knowledge, attitudes, behaviours and skills that may contribute to healthy interpersonal relationships.
- To document the national and school-level contexts, including the programmatic inputs and mechanisms that shape the implementation of CSE, and their implications for achieving outcomes.
This report presents an overview of the study findings from all five countries. Although the study was not intended to be a comparative exercise, the report highlights differences in programme delivery, content and outcomes across and within these countries. In addition, it provides an initial framework for understanding how to develop measurements for advancing this area of CSE research and programming.
